Digital Onboarding for Impartial, Inc.

These instructional videos & microlearning modules provide engaging training to create efficient & supported self-starters. I used tools like Camtasia, Articulate Rise, and Vyond.

Responsibilities: analysis, instructional design, storyboarding, eLearning development, visual design, narration, prototyping, assessment, evaluation
Target Audience: incoming college-age summer interns
Tools Used: Camtasia, Vyond, Articulate Rise, Clipchamp, Microsoft Office
Budget: Low to Medium
Client: Impartial, Inc.
Year: 2023

I reached out to the founder of Impartial, Inc, a criminal justice non-profit organization, and volunteered my instructional design services. Their biggest need was an onboarding solution for their incoming summer interns who will be conducting criminal justice research and a few other tasks.  The client only had a rough idea of expectations for interns but felt providing training would bring a more smooth and successful experience.

Instructional Design

The client had the idea of creating instructional videos for the training.  After further discussions with the client and analysis of learner profiles and business goals, I proposed a training consisting of the original three instructional videos, as well as 2 microlearning modules, a survey, and a job aid to provide a more engaging, interactive, and long-lasting training experience.  In addition, this solution of three shorter videos and two microlearning modules instead of one long video would ease the cognitive load of these learners.

I worked independently on this project, serving as project manager, designer, and developer.  I began with designing instructional objectives, then individual research and interviews with SMEs brought the necessary content knowledge.  After outlining the videos and microlearnings, I created text-based storyboards, including scripts for the instructional videos, which brought plans and goals together.

Regular communication and check-ins with the client aided the process and kept the client informed of progress.

eLearning Development

Instructional videos were designed using Camtasia for narration, editing, and putting the instructional videos together.  The final video titles became “General Internship Basics,” “Criminal Justice Research Writing,” and “Going Beyond the Basics.”

Camtasia and Clipchamp served as tools for graphic and video design.  I created some of the graphics with Vyond.

Two subjects (Choosing a Research Topic and Time Management) originally in instructional video three were chosen for microlearning due to their importance and the desire to emphasize these skills for our learners.  I proposed utilizing Articulate Rise to the client, and after demonstrating its interactivity and receiving approval, I moved forward with development.

First iterations of the instructional videos and microlearning prototypes were given to the client for review and revisions of the products were made with feedback.

Project Results & Takeaways

This onboarding was used by the client for their incoming interns, and will continue to be used for future intern cohorts.  It will provide an organized and effective transition for the interns, and give them the resources to work efficiently, self-start, and bring value-added content for Impartial, Inc.

The final steps of this project, including developing the assessment survey and job aid, have been completed.  Final copies of videos and microlearnings include all final client feedback and revisions. After implementation, the client informed me the training was a success with interns better understanding the job expectations and reporting they’re more excited about the work and impact than previously expected.

I enjoyed working with Vyond and learning a new technology tool.  I love the professional, clean, easy-to-use graphics and features.  I am officially a fan and hope to use it again.  I saw growth in my video editing skills, including in graphics and audio quality, and see these as my best instructional videos yet.
