Interactive eLearning for Historic Site
This series of solutions includes a scenario-based eLearning course, virtual interaction made using Storyline, and a digital job aid.
Responsibilities: analysis, instructional design, visual and graphic design, eLearning development, assessment creation
Target Audience: new hires of Historic Oak View County Park
Tools Used: Articulate Rise, Articulate Storyline, Canva
Budget: Low to Medium
Year: 2023
I started this independent project for two reasons:
I value Historic Oak View County Park and how it serves the public.
I was eager to create instructional materials that I would have benefited from having when I worked there.
So I created 3 unique products that would serve as part of a larger series of instructional offerings to new hires of the park.
Experience the Project
Instructional Design
Problem analysis was minimal as there was no official client and I went into this project already knowing the goal of improving instructional materials and training for new hires. I used my own experience of procedures and knowledge from working there along with materials from the Oak View’s website and brochures for forgotten details and changed procedures. Then I chose products and began the outline process, all with the end objectives and expectations in mind.
Adult-learner focused products were designed to be self-directed, relevant to the job, and problem based. The first product, a scenario-based course, began with mind mapping various situations employees often experience, then creating outlines combining content, scenarios, and knowledge checks. General assessment goals and questions were created at this time as well. The second product, a virtual interaction assessing the content knowledge and decision-making skills of the learner, began with brainstorming and then a visual storyboard. The third product, a job aid for employees, was designed last and embodies many of the elements taught in the previous two products, but serves its own unique purpose.
eLearning Development
I created the scenario-based learning course in Articulate Rise. I compiled all assets and split the course into six lessons including the summary and final assessment. The assessment was developed with interactivity and higher-order thinking questions to truly test the knowledge of the learner. Most graphics came from the actual park itself to stay accurate and on brand.
I created the virtual interaction in Articulate Storyline. Learners must drag various job-related items to their appropriate location given the prompt. This was created with triggered hot spots and decision feedback.
I created the job aid in Canva using available graphics and selecting a complimentary color palette. Utilization of graphic design principles and attention to colors, fonts, visuals and text, spatial contiguity, and overall coherence produced a professional, accessible, and effective job aid.
Project Results & Takeaways
These products offer meaningful and interactive training ideal for adult learners & targeted at eliminating problems quickly or before they even start.
While these are real products created for real problems for a real company, currently they have not been delivered to Historic Oak View County Park. If I brought this to Oak View, I would look at increasing the complexity and challenge level of the Storyline interaction.
I would also want to meet with the park director and park education director for input on changes and additions to procedures or scenarios within the products. Then I would make changes based on their feedback and additional desires. Therefore, these current products would serve as the first iterations or prototypes.
